Dr. Sarika Patel
Dr. Sarika Patel graduated from the University of Florida College of Veterinary Medicine in 2008. Joining Shaffer Animal Hospital in June 2008, she instantly felt right at home. She enjoys general surgery and has an interest in cardiology. Outside of veterinary medicine, she enjoys a variety of activities ranging from ballroom dancing to spending quality time with her Maine Coon mix, Siren, who she rescued after being hit by a car. Dr. Patel looks forward to traveling abroad when she can.
Dr. Nicole Gerrish
Dr. Nicole Gerrish graduated from Michigan State University College of Veterinary Medicine in 2008 and joined Shaffer Animal Hospital’s team that July. Dr. Gerrish enjoys the variety of cases she sees, but has a special interest in ophthalmology and behavior. In her free time, she enjoys training for and running marathons as well as spending time with family and friends. She has one tabby cat, Pieces, and two giant lapdog Great Danes, Arlo and Desi.
Dr. Melissa Berelsman
Dr. Melissa Berelsman graduated from the University of Florida College of Veterinary Medicine in 2013 and joined our practice in June of 2013. Her professional interests include soft tissue surgery, cardiology and dermatology. In her free time, Dr. Berelsman enjoys spending time with her husband, daughters Emily and Audrey and family while enjoying the outdoors. She has a Labrador Retriever named Lexi, Dotty the Chihuahua, and a stray cat that she rescued, Luna.
Dr. Cynthia Thomas
Dr. Cynthia Thomas graduated from the University of Florida College of Veterinary Medicine in 1986. She was employed by the Shaffer’s at their previous clinic and decided to make the transition over to the new clinic. Prior to her veterinary career, Dr. Thomas was an avid flier, scuba diver, and marathon runner. Outside of her work, she enjoys biking various scenic trails throughout Central Florida, spending time with her two dogs, Sizzle and Jill, as well as her twin daughters Taylor and Tyler.
Dr. Molly Kovacs
Dr. Molly Kovacs graduated from the University of Florida College of Veterinary Medicine in 2016 and started working at Shaffer Animal Hospital in June. While she enjoys practicing all aspects of veterinary medicine, she has an interest in dermatology and soft tissue surgery. In her free time, Dr. Kovacs enjoys playing her favorite sport, which is UItimate Frisbee. She has a French Bulldog, named Boris, who lives with her family in Jacksonville. She recently adopted a Terrier Mix named Watson.

Assist the doctors in exam rooms, treatment and surgery. They also provide compassionate care for your pet if they need to stay with us for any reason. These members of our staff are hands-on with your pet in ensuring efficient and safe care of every patient we see.
