Preventative Medicine

Nothing is more important than routine examinations and preventive medicine for your pet. Remember that your pet ages at a faster rate than we do. By 2 years old, they are similar to a 24 year old person, and then age about 4 years to every one of ours. This means that medical conditions can come on relatively quickly, hence the need for thorough physicals each year. Depending on the age and breed of your pet, an annual blood profile is recommended for all animals. When annual vaccines are given, your pet receives a complete physical to try and detect any potential disease before it worsens. Good histories are an important part of any physical exam, and we rely on you to provide us with as much information as possible about your pet’s normal routine. Common indicators of disease can be changes in weight, thirst, appetite, energy levels, breathing, coughing, urinary habits and stool character. Often times just by talking with you, we get hints about medical conditions that a physical exam might not reveal.

Preventative medicine such as labwork, annual exams and routine vaccinations is the best way to ensure your pet’s long term health. From your very first appointment, we can work with you to set up a preventative health care plan for your pet. As your pet matures, we offer more frequent check-ups and geriatric screening tests to detect many illnesses early, when they are easier to manage. We also recommend professional dental cleanings if needed, to treat periodontal disease and overall quality of your pet’s life.

We have the capability to perform diagnostic blood profiles, urinalysis, cytology, serologic tests (e.g. Occult Heartworm, Feline Leukemia Virus, Parvo), and routine parasite exams in-house. During the last decade there has been a revolution in X-ray technology. Traditionally, X-rays have been recorded on photographic film and developed in a similar process used in normal photography. In 2005, Shaffer Animal Hospital opened G.O. D.O.G.S. A place where your canine companion can participate in “total” wellness through training and grooming in a fun, safe, and Fear Free environment. Euthanasia and Aftercare

To prevent needless suffering is a gift that we can give our beloved furry family members but is the most difficult decision a pet owner is ever faced with. Many owners struggle with guilt of making such a big decision and have many questions regarding the process. Our team is here to help you.

When will I know it is time?

Some families feel it may be time and are confident in their decision, while others need more guidance, due to emotions that can cloud rational thoughts and judgment. Even though the conversation of euthanasia can be sad and uncomfortable, it is important to include your family and your pet’s veterinarian in the final decision.

Is an appointment recommended for euthanasia? And how do I schedule it?

An appointment is strongly recommended. Our caring and compassionate veterinary staff will help you plan as well meet any special requests you may have, regarding the handling of your pets remains. You are not alone in this; we will walk you through the entire process.

What is involved in a Euthanasia Appointment?

We will assess your pet’s quality of life.
We listen to any concerns and questions your family may have surrounding euthanasia and aftercare.
If your pet is having any discomfort, sedation may be offered for comfort.
An intravenous catheter is often placed to ease the administration of the euthanasia medications. The actual procedure is often a peaceful one. When you and your family are ready, the doctor will administer the euthanasia medication, once given in most cases, your pet will pass peacefully in seconds.
We will ask if you would like a complimentary keepsake such as a clay or ink paw, and even fur clippings.
Afterwards you may spend as much time with your pet that you need.

Can I stay with my pet?

Staying with your pet is highly encouraged. If you do not wish to, you can say your goodbyes and our staff will remain with your pet. Every situation is different an what you and your family need is important to us.

Can children be present?

Each child is different and only you the parent can decide this. Take in consideration age, maturity, behavior and sensitivities of your child/children. Some of our staff have children as well, and we can share our experiences if needed.

Can pets be present?

Yes, our pets grieve, too. Remember to consider your pets temperament and behavior, when deciding whether or not they will be present.

What are my options for aftercare?

Private cremation provides you with the opportunity to keep your pet’s cremated remains as a permanent and personal keepsake. When you choose private cremation, your treasured pet will be the only pet in the cremation chamber during the cremation process. When the cremation process is complete, we ensure that you receive only the cremated remains of your pet.
Communal cremation consists of your pet is gently placed into the crematory together with other pets. When the cremation process is complete, the communal remains are collected and placed in a communal burial lot at one of our pet cemeteries. Because no cremated remains are returned to you when you choose a communal cremation, you may wish to consider one of our personalized memorial paw prints as a timeless remembrance.
Home burial is an option for some who own land. Our staff will help prepare your pet in accordance with local requirements.
