Hello Paw-lite Manners 101 Pet Degree Class!

Here is your continued practice Homework for Week 7 of Paw-lite Manners 101.

NOTE: If you plan to participate in the AKC S.T.A.R Puppy Program and have not yet RSVPed, please do so at this time so that an AKC Approved CGC Evalutor will be present to evaluate you and your dog.

  • Emergency Recall (see NOTE below)
Goal for this week: Your dog will be able to his or her emergency recall with distractions from 10 feet away.
Graduates of Puppy Pet Degree: Your dog will be able to respond to his or her emergency recall word with two people randomly calling the dog outside from a distance of 20 feet.
NOTE: Try to play what we like to call the Check In game. While your dogs are doing something fun, get in the habit of interrupting with your emergency recall, providing a delicious, extremely high value treat, and then sending them back to do exactly what they were doing before. We want to teach them that this word ALWAYS means something of high value and that it NEVER makes the fun go away. HINT: If you need to end your dog’s fun (i.e., take them home, bring them inside, put them in a crate, etc.) use a different cue!
If your dog is doing it perfectly inside, then take your training outside. A really great way to manage your recalls is with a 20 foot leash. You can take it with you to practice in new and distracting environments to help your dog generalize your Safety Recall in different locations.

  • Everything Else! (please refer to your Report Card to review all the skills you will be assessed on next week!)

Ready for the next level? Our Paw-lite Manners 201 Pet Degree Class is an 8 week class that adds the three Ds (distance, duration, and distraction) to the skills the dogs have already learned. We also add some new skills, such as Waiting at doors, Heel, Stand, and Greeting other dogs. In the introductory level class, we asked your dog to stay while you took a few steps away from him. In Paw-lite Manners 201, we ask you to be able to walk in a circle around him, squeak and toss a ball, have another dog run by him – all while he’s in a Stay. We will increase the level of difficulty for all his skills, and do so at his own pace.

Cost: $264
